Again.. read the upstream bug report. Aaronp quite clearly points out that "this is not something we can implement for earlier GPUs, so marking WONTFIX". It doesn't matter what you put in your xorg.conf. The driver is not able to drive those chips with widescreen resolutions. Not now, not ever. Place your bets on nouveau, which will get in Ubuntu in 8.10 at the earliest.
