I have the same issue with a Wacom Bamboo. My tablet works fine if I launch programs in the underlying X server, i.e. with "DISPLAY=:0 inkscape" for instance. So I temporarily use this as a workaround. (see http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-201152.html for using a window manager on :0).
