The problems had occured in Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty. In 7.10 Gutsy I haven't had any problems, except for the one thing that you mentioned, it takes a while to transfer the files, I guess this bug should be marked resolved or something.
And, sorry, I can't really remember if the files were bigger in total than the available free space on the memory card of my mobile phone , too long ago :) In gutsy it displays an error if the filesize is bigger than the available free space.
