I have the same problem, 100% reproducible on all machines on our network (all slowish machines running Gutsy). Opening text files on the share consistently succeeds when there is an instance of gedit already open, and consistently fails otherwise. Error in .xsession-errors is the same as last poster: WARNING **: Hit unhandled case 3 (Internal error) in gedit_io_loading_error_message_area_new.
