Luca Cerutti has a point, which may be relevant to finding the cause:
Windows also has this problem in some cases, to wit, my Acer Travelmate
4010 laptop (Windows XP, with Hitachi IC25N060ATMR04 drive) has been
getting increasingly more Load_Cycles per hour. The average over the
last 250 hours was 25 per hour (Load_Cycle_Count/Power_On_Hours). So
the problem extends beyond Ubuntu, and Linux. If my wife didn't need it
for her job, I'd run a live Ubunto on it and see what happens under
Linux. Seems like more multi-OS data on the same machine needs to be
collected to get some controlled data.
