Done.  It didn't work.  I will attach the logs you've previously
requested.

BUT ... I also have an additional data point for you this time.
Although nothing showed up in the logs, I happened to be using console 1
instead of the gnome session when I pulled the drive, and there was
output to the console:

  ata4: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0xa frozen
  ata4: ACPI event

After rebooting, I did a grep for frozen in /var/log, and found nothing.
