I upgraded GNOME Shell back to 50.1-0ubuntu1.4 and performed a full system reboot. After rebooting, the mouse cursor works correctly in Windows mstsc. This suggests that a full reboot may have resolved the issue, rather than downgrading to 50.1-0ubuntu1.3. I will continue monitoring for recurrence.
