Update: I have confirmed a working workaround on 7.0.0-38-generic.

My existing /etc/modprobe.d/legion-audio.conf contained:

options snd-hda-intel model=,17aa:3855

With this configuration, the internal speakers were silent, and the
kernel selected the fixup for PCI SSID 17aa:3811.

I changed it to:

options snd-hda-intel model=17aa:3855,17aa:3855

After rebuilding the initramfs for 7.0.0-38-generic and rebooting, the
internal speakers work correctly.

The kernel now reports:

ALC287: picked fixup for alias SSID 17aa:3855

Both CS35L41 amplifiers successfully load their speaker-protection
firmware and bind to the Realtek HDA codec:

Firmware Loaded - Type: spk-prot, Gain: 17
CS35L41 Bound - SSID: 17aa3855, BST: 1, VSPK: 1, CH: L, FW EN: 1, SPKID: 0
CS35L41 Bound - SSID: 17aa3855, BST: 1, VSPK: 1, CH: R, FW EN: 1, SPKID: 0

This suggests that the assignment of the snd-hda-intel model parameter
to the appropriate controller instance is relevant to the failure.

The workaround is confirmed on my machine, although the underlying
reason for the difference between the two kernel builds remains to be
established.
