Public bug reported:
After upgrading Ubuntu 24.04 from kernel 7.0.0-34-generic to
7.0.0-38-generic, I experienced the first complete hard system freeze on
this machine.
Hardware:
- Lenovo IdeaPad 320-15IKB
- Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Kaby Lake, PCI ID 8086:5917), using i915
- NVIDIA GeForce MX150, using the proprietary NVIDIA driver
- External 2560x1440 monitor running at 59.91 Hz
The same hardware and display configuration has been used for years
without this type of freeze.
Timeline:
- 2026-10-04 22:52: kernel 7.0.0-38.38~24.04.4 was installed, upgrading
linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 from 7.0.0-34.34~24.04.1.
- The first hard freeze occurred during the following day / first period of
normal use with 7.0.0-38.
- There had been no such freezes with 7.0.0-34.
Symptoms:
- Display becomes completely frozen.
- Keyboard and mouse no longer respond.
- Audio continuously loops a very short portion of the last audio buffer.
- The system never recovers.
- A forced power-off/restart is required.
- NMI watchdog and kernel watchdog were both enabled
(`/proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog = 1`, `/proc/sys/kernel/watchdog = 1`), but no
hard-lockup report was persisted.
During the affected boot, the kernel log contains:
i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A
(start=790460 end=790461) time 246 us, min 1431, max 1439, scanline
start 1421, end 1443
There was also an earlier rejected display mode:
i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] User-defined mode not supported:
"2560x1440": 144 ...
This does NOT represent the display mode normally in use. The external
monitor is normally running at 2560x1440 @ 59.91 Hz and has been used
this way for years.
Expected behavior:
The machine should remain stable as it did with kernel 7.0.0-34.
Actual behavior:
With 7.0.0-38, the machine experienced a complete unrecoverable hard freeze
requiring a forced power cycle.
This appears to be a regression introduced between Ubuntu kernel
7.0.0-34.34~24.04.1 and 7.0.0-38.38~24.04.4.
I can test additional Ubuntu kernels or upstream/mainline kernels if
needed.
