Public bug reported:
**Title:** NetworkManager aborts (SIGABRT) in nms-keyfile-writer.c:551
when importing an .ovpn profile on 26.04
**Package:** network-manager
**Ubuntu version:** 26.04 LTS (resolute), upgraded from 24.04 LTS
**Package versions:** (run `apt policy network-manager libnm0 network-
manager-openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome libnetplan1` and paste the
result here)
**What happened:**
Importing an OpenVPN profile makes the NetworkManager daemon crash. This
happens from both the GUI (Settings → Network → VPN → Import from file) and the
command line:
```
nmcli connection import type openvpn file client.ovpn
Error: Failed to add 'client' connection: Message recipient disconnected from
message bus without replying
```
systemd then restarts the daemon. It happened every time I tried, at
least five times in one session.
**Expected:** The profile is imported, or the import fails with an error
message. The daemon should not abort.
**Log (`journalctl -u NetworkManager -b`):**
```
<error> BUG: the profile cannot be stored in keyfile format without becoming
unusable: cannot access file: No such file or directory
nm:ERROR:../src/core/settings/plugins/keyfile/nms-keyfile-writer.c:551:<unknown-fcn>:
assertion failed: (<dropped>)
Bail out! nm:ERROR:../src/core/settings/plugins/keyfile/nms-keyfile-writer.c:551
NetworkManager.service: Main process exited, code=dumped, status=6/ABRT
```
**Notes:**
- The `.ovpn` file has the CA, certificate and private key inline (`<ca>`,
`<cert>`, `<key>` blocks). The private key is passphrase-protected, and the
profile uses `auth-user-pass`.
- After the failed imports, `~/.cert/nm-openvpn/` contained only certificate
files from earlier imports on the old system. No new files were written. I
don't know whether the missing certificate files cause the "cannot access file"
error, but it may be related.
- The same assertion at the same line appears in earlier reports with different
triggers: LP #2039825 (EAP settings) and LP #2055148 (DNS over TLS).
- Running `openvpn` directly with the same file works fine. Only the
NetworkManager import crashes.
