This is the pigz utility packaged for Debian. All relevant information can be found in the manpage pigz(1). pigz is supposed to be a replacement of gzip - however, the default installation is not replacing gzip binary due to various concerns, like differences in the output data, differences in program/help output, basic risk considerations (/bin/gzip is an essential executable), and the fact that it's installed in /usr spaces which might be not located within / filesystem space. If the mentioned concerns don't scare you or are not relevant, it's possible to make it a system-wide default setting by running the following commands as root.
