Public bug reported:
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
Kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic
GPU: AMD/ATI 1002:150e
Driver: amdgpu
Display Core: DCN 3.5
Connection: HDMI
After the display had been idle, the monitor would not wake up.
The machine was still reachable over SSH, and HDMI was still detected as
connected:
/sys/class/drm/card1-HDMI-A-1/status: connected
Restarting GDM and switching virtual terminals did not restore video
output.
Kernel logs showed tasks blocked in the AMD display power-management
path:
dc_dmub_srv_exit_low_power_state
dc_dmub_srv_apply_idle_power_optimizations
dcn35_apply_idle_power_optimizations
dc_exit_ips_for_hw_access_internal
amdgpu_dm_atomic_check
drm_modeset_lock
The GPU then stopped responding:
SMU: No response
Failed to disable gfxoff!
ring sdma0 timeout
Ring sdma0 reset failed
GPU reset begin!
Failed to power ungate VPE!
DPM enable vpe failed
The kernel attempted GPU recovery but it failed.
The problem became severe enough that systemd/logind operations started
failing with:
Transport endpoint is not connected
Normal reboot also failed:
Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Transport endpoint is not connected
Call to Reboot failed: Transport endpoint is not connected
Even forced reboot did not complete, and the system ultimately required
a physical power cycle.
After the power cycle, booting again with 7.0.0-31-generic immediately
reproduced these warnings during amdgpu initialization:
REG_WAIT timeout 1us * 100000 tries - optc35_disable_crtc line:162
REG_WAIT timeout 1us * 100000 tries - optc35_disable_crtc line:165
The same warnings were also present at the beginning of the previous
boot that later experienced the GPU hang.
Kernel command line is stock:
quiet splash vt.handoff=7
No custom amdgpu kernel parameters are configured.
Installed kernels:
7.0.0-30-generic
7.0.0-31-generic
Expected result:
The display should wake normally from idle and the AMD GPU should remain
responsive.
Actual result:
The AMD display/SMU stack hangs after display idle, GPU reset fails, DRM
becomes blocked, and the machine may require a physical power cycle.
I have not yet tested whether 7.0.0-30-generic is affected.
The kernel also created an AMDGPU device coredump:
/sys/class/drm/card1/device/devcoredump/data
