Thanks Vladimir for investigating. A problem with my RAM was my first suspicion. I ran a full memtest86 to make sure it wasn't that.
In any case, I think we can close this, as I have not been able to reproduce it. It was likely a combination of package updates on my "stonking" install (libc, kernel, whatever).
