Ubuntu 24.04 LTS HWE kernel regression affecting Realtek RTL8852CE PCIe
802.11ax Wi-Fi (`10ec:c852`) using the in-tree `rtw89_8852ce` driver.
**Working kernel:** `6.17.0-40-generic`
Wi-Fi operates normally and connects successfully.
**Affected kernels:**
`7.0.0-30-generic`
`7.0.0-31-generic`
Under kernel 7.0, the Wi-Fi device is detected and the correct firmware
is loaded, but the interface fails to become operational.
Both the working 6.17 kernel and failing 7.0 kernel use the same Realtek
firmware:
`rtw89/rtw8852c_fw-2.bin`
Firmware version:
`0.27.125.0 (526f84c0)`
The installed `linux-firmware-realtek` package verifies successfully
using:
`sudo dpkg -V linux-firmware-realtek`
with no errors.
Under `7.0.0-31-generic`, the kernel log shows:
`SER catches error: 0x4000`
`xtal si not ready(W): offset=90 val=10 mask=10`
`mac preinit fail, ret: -110`
`failed to leave idle state`
`read rf busy swsi`
`write rf busy swsi`
`Update probe request failed`
`Err: ser L2 re-config timeout`
The failure repeats and Wi-Fi remains unavailable/non-functional.
Under the working `6.17.0-40-generic` kernel, the same firmware is
loaded. Some `SER catches error: 0x4000` messages also occur, but the
driver recovers and proceeds normally to authentication and association,
for example:
`wlp8s0: authenticate with ...`
`wlp8s0: send auth ...`
The problem is reproducible when booting kernel 7.0. Returning to kernel
6.17 restores normal Wi-Fi operation without any firmware or hardware
changes.
NetworkManager Wi-Fi power-saving settings and `rtw89` PCIe power-
management options were tested but did not resolve the problem and were
subsequently reverted.
This appears to be a regression in the kernel 7.0 `rtw89` stack
affecting RTL8852CE initialization rather than a missing firmware or
NetworkManager configuration issue.
I have retained `6.17.0-40-generic` as the working default kernel and
can test subsequent HWE kernels if required.
