Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

The Ubuntu built wine packages are approximately 3 times the size of the
winehq.org packages: wine_0.9.53-0ubuntu1_i386.deb (33.8 MiB) vs 11MiB
wine_0.9.53~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10-1_i386.deb

This seems to be due to the failure to strip the debug symbols from the
binaries, as attested to by the changelog entry:
wine (0.9.41-0ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * debian/rules: ignore dh_strip errors to fix FTBFS in buildds

and the relevant build log output (from
«http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11310862/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-i386.wine_0.9.53-0ubuntu1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz»:

This may well be a bug in pkg-create-dbgsym. Building the Ubuntu source
package in an environment without pkg-create-dbgsym results in a binary
package of comparable size to the winehq packages.
