Public bug reported:
Hardware: HP Spectre x360 (2017/2018 model), Intel Kaby Lake iGPU (i915),
internal panel eDP-1 1920x1080.
OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (resolute), fresh install.
Regression:
- linux-image-7.0.0-14-generic : suspend/resume works correctly
- linux-image-7.0.0-30-generic : internal panel stays black after resume
Same machine, same OS install, only the kernel differs.
Symptoms on 7.0.0-30:
- After resume, the system is fully alive and interactive (reachable via SSH).
- An external monitor connected via USB-C shows the session normally,
including the lock screen; only the internal eDP panel shows nothing.
- Also reproduces from a text VT (Ctrl+Alt+F3), so it is not GNOME/mutter
specific.
Observed state while the panel is black:
- /sys/class/drm/card1-eDP-1/{status,enabled,dpms} = connected / enabled / On
- /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power = 0, brightness = 1023 (max)
- i915_display_info: [CRTC:58:pipe A] enable=yes, active=yes,
mode 1920x1080@60, port_clock=270000, lane_count=2,
[PLANE:34:plane 1A] visible=yes with a valid FB.
i.e. the display pipeline appears to be scanning out normally.
- dmesg shows a clean cycle: "PM: suspend entry (deep)" ... "PM: suspend exit",
with no i915 errors and no flip_done timeouts.
- Shining a light on the panel shows no image, so the panel itself is not
displaying, rather than only the backlight being off.
Things that did NOT help:
- Writing to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness and bl_power
- i915.enable_dc=0 (verified applied: DC3->DC5 count stayed 0)
- i915.enable_psr=0
- mem_sleep_default=s2idle
- Restarting gdm (a freshly started compositor still shows nothing)
- Unplugging the external monitor / changing the display configuration
Note: the panel reports two fixed modes (1920x1080@60 and 1920x1080@40).
Possibly related: LP#2163734 (same 7.0 vs 6.17 regression pattern,
Haswell).
