# BCM4360 with wl remains associated but loses all Layer-2 connectivity
after idle
## Summary
On a 15-inch Mid-2014 MacBook Pro (`MacBookPro11,2`) with a Broadcom
BCM4360 PCIe wireless adapter (`14e4:43a0`), the proprietary `wl` driver
intermittently stops passing traffic after the system has been idle for
some time. NetworkManager continues to report the Wi-Fi connection as
activated with good signal, but the IPv4 gateway becomes unreachable.
Restarting NetworkManager restores connectivity temporarily.
## System
- Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute)
- Hardware: Apple MacBookPro11,2
- Wireless adapter: Broadcom BCM4360 802.11ac, PCI ID `14e4:43a0`, revision 03
- Interface: `wlp2s0`
- Driver: `wl` from `broadcom-sta-dkms 6.30.223.271-29ubuntu1`
- Driver build: `6.30.223.271 (r587334)`
- Kernels affected: `7.0.0-14-generic` and `7.0.0-30-generic`
- NetworkManager: 1.54.3
- IPv4 address: `192.168.2.133/24` via DHCP
- IPv4 gateway: `192.168.2.1`
## Expected result
The Wi-Fi interface should continue passing traffic and retain Layer-2
connectivity to the gateway while associated with the access point.
## Actual result
After an idle period:
1. NetworkManager still reports `wlp2s0` as connected and activated.
2. Signal and BSSID still appear valid.
3. The default route remains installed.
4. Pinging `192.168.2.1` returns `Destination Host Unreachable`.
5. Internet access is lost and a Cloudflare Tunnel running on the host
subsequently reports Error 1033.
6. `systemctl restart NetworkManager` restores gateway and Internet
connectivity temporarily.
The issue has recurred on both listed kernels, so it is not limited to
one kernel build.
## Configuration already checked
- NetworkManager is the only active network manager.
- `systemd-networkd` is disabled and masked.
- The connection is pinned to BSSID `92:25:84:9F:C5:77`, so unexpected roaming
is unlikely.
- `802-11-wireless.powersave` is explicitly set to `2` (disabled).
- Global NetworkManager Wi-Fi power saving is set to `2` (disabled).
- The module configuration contains `options wl nompc=1`, disabling the
driver's internal MPC feature.
- Suspend, hibernate, hybrid-sleep and sleep targets are masked.
- The route and DHCP configuration are correct while the connection is healthy.
- `broadcom-sta` DKMS is installed successfully for both affected kernels.
## Relevant kernel messages
During previous affected sessions, the kernel logged:

The module also identifies itself as:

There is no corresponding NetworkManager state transition to
disconnected when the silent traffic failure occurs. This suggests that
the association state remains up while the driver or firmware data path
becomes unresponsive.
## Reproduction
1. Boot the system and connect to the configured 5 GHz access point using
NetworkManager.
2. Confirm that the gateway and Internet are reachable.
3. Leave the machine running, sometimes idle, for several hours.
4. Observe that NetworkManager still reports the connection as active, but the
gateway is no longer reachable.
5. Restart NetworkManager and observe that connectivity returns.
The exact time to failure varies, so the issue is intermittent rather
than immediately reproducible.
## Additional notes
This is a headless server and the Wi-Fi connection carries production
traffic. Cloudflare Error 1033 is a downstream consequence of the host
losing network connectivity, not the original cause.
Please advise whether additional `wl`, cfg80211, neighbour-table, or
packet-capture diagnostics can be enabled to capture the next
occurrence.
