Public bug reported:
[ Impact ]
The updated flashrom package will not be used when it could be, forcing
an unnecessary reboot when flashing the boot EEPROM on Pi 5 (and later)
models.
[ Test plan ]
For affected $series:
* Flash ubuntu server for raspberry pi to a fresh card
* Boot on Pi 5 and run through first time setup
* Enable proposed
* sudo apt install -t $series-proposed rpi-eeprom
* sudo rpi-eeprom-update -a
* If boot EEPROM does not require updating, sudo rpi-eeprom-update -f
/lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader-2712/default/${current_version}.bin
* Ensure flashrom is used (/boot/firmware/rpieeprom.upd does not exist)
* sudo reboot
* Ensure boot still works
[ Where things could go wrong ]
This change doesn't affect *which* boot EEPROM is flashed, but changes
the method by which it is flashed (hence the low priority). Flashrom is
not used by default prior to the Pi 5, hence the test plan is limited to
those models only.
There is obviously a risk that changing the method of flashing might
affect how the boot EEPROM is written, which could affect boot, hence
the reboot is tested after flashing the EEPROM.
[ Original description ]
LP: #2160030 updates flashrom to support the newer Atmel chips. However,
the newer rpi-eeprom package checks for this patch by testing the
version string for the sub-string "-rpt" which the Ubuntu version does
not include. Use an alternate test to check for this patch.
