This is really an issue with the GPU driver packages. ubuntu-drivers
only queries the modaliases reported as supported within the driver
packages when determining which driver to recommend.
Jacob Martin has reached out to NVIDIA to ask them to fix this in their
packaging, which should prevent ubuntu-drivers from pulling the open
drivers on incompatible systems once applied.
