Public bug reported:
I have an AMD Radeon RX 550 connected via HDMI to a HISENSE TV.
HDMI audio becomes severely distorted/stuttering when the display
resolution is set to 3456x1944. Voices sound accelerated and the audio
is unusable.
Changing only the display resolution to 2880x1620 immediately fixes the
problem. HDMI audio then plays perfectly.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect the AMD Radeon RX 550 to the HISENSE TV via HDMI.
2. Set the display resolution to 3456x1944.
3. Play audio/video (for example in Firefox).
4. HDMI audio becomes heavily distorted/stuttering.
5. Change the display resolution to 2880x1620.
6. Play the same content again.
7. HDMI audio works normally.
While the problem occurs, the kernel repeatedly logs:
amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: [drm] REG_WAIT timeout 10us * 10 tries -
program_formatter_reset_dig_resync_fifo line:646
The first occurrence I found in the journal was on 2026-08-15, and the
message was repeated many times.
Expected result:
Changing the display resolution should not corrupt HDMI audio.
Actual result:
At 3456x1944 HDMI audio is severely distorted/stuttering. At 2880x1620 it works
correctly.
Additional observation:
Direct ALSA playback to the HDMI device was able to produce clean audio during
troubleshooting.
