Public bug reported:
Description:
After upgrading linux-firmware from 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.27 to
0ubuntu2.29 on 2026-08-14, the display output became corrupted: the
right portion of the screen shows dense vertical blue/green/white
stripes. The corruption appears as soon as the GDM login screen shows up
and persists on the desktop.
Hardware:
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX 6900 XT (Navi 21, 1002:73af), amdgpu driver
Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI), BIOS 1407
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
Monitors: Dell U2719D (2560x1440 via DisplayPort), LG (via HDMI)
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
What I observed:
The corruption is not present in UEFI BIOS or GRUB — it only appears once
amdgpu takes over the display.
Screenshots taken while the stripes are visible are completely clean, so the
rendered framebuffer is correct and only the display output is affected.
Reproduces on both monitors, on both DP and HDMI, and with only a single
monitor connected — so it is not cable, port or monitor related.
Reproduces identically on kernel 7.0.0-28-generic and on 6.17.0-40-generic, so
it is not a kernel regression.
GPU temperatures are normal (edge 48C, junction 59C, mem 52C) and there are no
amdgpu errors, ring timeouts or GPU resets in dmesg.
Forcing a fixed memory clock (power_dpm_force_performance_level=manual,
pp_dpm_mclk=3) does not help.
Relevant dmesg line:
amdgpu 0000:0c:00.0: [drm] Wait for DMUB auto-load failed: 3
Steps to reproduce:
Install linux-firmware 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.29 on a Navi 21 system.
Reboot.
Vertical stripes appear on the right part of the screen from the login screen
onward.
Workaround:
Downgrading to linux-firmware 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.26, running
sudo update-initramfs -u and rebooting fixes the issue completely. Re-
upgrading to 2.29 brings it back.
Expected: clean display output, as with 2.26/2.27.
Actual: corrupted display output on the right portion of the screen.
