I can't reproduce this error and the following log lines strongly indicate to 
me that a cache already existed when the command was run:
    supermin: acquiring lock on /var/tmp/.guestfs-1000/lock
    supermin: if-newer: output does not need rebuilding

I therefore think that the most likely explanation is a transient
failure resulting in a stale cache. Would it be possible to remove the
/var/tmp/.guestfs-<UID>/appliance.d folder and retry?
