There is an issue with the default desktop wallpaper configuration in Ubuntu 
26.04.
The issue occurs in both of the following cases:
A fresh installation of Ubuntu 26.04
An upgrade from Ubuntu 24.04 to Ubuntu 26.04
In a fresh installation, both picture-uri and picture-uri-dark in the GNOME 
background settings point to the same file:
file:///usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png
As a result, changing the wallpaper for Dark mode also affects the wallpaper 
setting for the Default (light) mode.
The problem can be worked around by setting picture-uri and picture-uri-dark to 
separate values.
For example, the current values can be checked with:
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri-dark
Both values point to the same warty-final-ubuntu.png file.
The Default and Dark wallpaper settings are expected to be independent, so 
having both settings point to the same default wallpaper appears to be the 
cause of the problem.
This issue is unrelated to authentication, login, GDM, or account settings. It 
concerns the default desktop wallpaper configuration.
