Thanks for checking! One option has been ruled out. I'm now suspecting
you could be hitting an issue due to
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=ed8be780bdbc
which was later on  fixed in upstream through this patch
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=a411ea4a87162898d2a0547fdfb721ddb7626be3
which is not yet available in Ubuntu kernel.

To check it easily, please try these mainline kernels (and disable all
out of tree drivers if you have any to avoid any crashes):

- https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v7.2-rc5/
