** Description changed: Hardware ======== Laptop: MSI Creator A16 AI+ A3HVGG (MS-15FK) CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 Integrated GPU: AMD Radeon 890M Discrete GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop BIOS: E15FKAMS.316 (2025-09-11) Operating System ================ Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon Based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVIDIA Open Driver 595.84 Problem ======= The system boots normally with Ubuntu HWE kernel 6.17.0-41. After upgrading to Ubuntu HWE kernels 7.0.0-27 and 7.0.0-28 the system consistently fails during graphical startup. The boot sequence is: - GRUB menu appears normally. - Ubuntu/Linux Mint splash screen appears. - The display then turns completely black. - No graphical login screen appears. - No visible TTY is available. - The machine does not recover. Booting the previous kernel immediately restores normal operation. Regression ========== Working kernel: 6.17.0-41-generic Broken kernels: 7.0.0-27-generic 7.0.0-28-generic Expected Result =============== The graphical login screen should appear normally. Actual Result ============= The display remains permanently black after the splash screen. Additional Information ====================== Kernel logs show that both the AMD and NVIDIA drivers initialize successfully and LightDM starts, but no graphical session becomes visible. I have attached: - failed kernel journal - full failed boot journal - working kernel journal - hardware information - PCI information - BIOS information - kernel command line At this point I cannot determine whether this is an Ubuntu HWE regression or an upstream Linux kernel regression. - _______________ - Testing: + Testing: 1. I attempted to install Ubuntu's vanilla mainline 7.2-rc5 build, but the linux-image package fails in its maintainer scripts with: - run-parts: missing operand + run-parts: missing operand The system uses Ubuntu 24.04's debianutils 5.17build1. I cleaned up the incomplete installation and did not reboot into the test kernel. Therefore I have not yet been able to determine whether the regression reproduces with upstream 7.2-rc5. + + 2. + Additional observation: while investigating the external HDMI issue, I found that this system uses hybrid AMD/NVIDIA graphics. The internal HDMI port is connected to the NVIDIA RTX 4070. With NVIDIA 610.43.02, the kernel/DRM layer detects the HDMI monitor correctly (HDMI-A-1: connected) and reads its available modes, but Xorg still exposes only the AMD Radeon 890M as a RandR provider, so no image is produced on the HDMI display. + + I also observed that the NVIDIA GPU can disappear from PCIe during early + boot (Link Down, Card not present) and reappear later (Card present, + Link Up), after which nvidia-drm initializes successfully. The same PCIe + behavior also occurs when using the otherwise working USB display setup, + so I cannot currently say whether it is related to the original + AMD/kernel regression. + + I am continuing to investigate this separately and do not yet consider + it evidence that the NVIDIA/HDMI issue and the original regression have + the same root cause.
