Public bug reported:
On Ubuntu 26.04 with TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption (UKI-based, pc-kernel snap
architecture), the Plymouth splash screen displays correctly during boot but
does not appear during shutdown or restart. The screen instead shows plain
text/console output (or goes blank) during the shutdown sequence.
System configuration:
Ubuntu 26.04
pc-kernel snap: 7.0.0-27.27 (rev 3589, tracking 26.04/stable)
Full Disk Encryption: TPM2-based, no passphrase (auto-unlock)
Boot architecture: UKI (kernel.efi) + systemd-boot, not GRUB/initramfs-tools
GPU: dual-GPU system — Intel integrated GPU as primary/display output, AMD
discrete GPU present for compute/gaming with no display connected to it
Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 26.04 with TPM-backed FDE enabled on a dual-GPU (Intel + AMD)
system
Boot the system — Plymouth splash displays correctly
Reboot or shut down the system
Observe: no Plymouth splash appears during shutdown/reboot
Expected behavior: Plymouth splash should display consistently on both boot and
shutdown/reboot.
Actual behavior: Splash only appears on boot; shutdown/reboot shows text
console output instead.
Diagnostics already collected:
journalctl -b -1 -u plymouth-poweroff.service -u plymouth-reboot.service:
jul 12 20:06:36 mope-ubuntu systemd[1]: Starting plymouth-reboot.service - Show
Plymouth Reboot Screen...
jul 12 20:06:37 mope-ubuntu systemd[1]: Started plymouth-reboot.service - Show
Plymouth Reboot Screen.
The service starts and completes with no errors logged, suggesting systemd's
handoff to Plymouth succeeds, but the visual splash does not render — pointing
toward a DRM/display handoff issue during the shutdown phase rather than a
service configuration problem.
Suspected related issue: This may share a root cause with LP #2105377
("Plymouth doesn't always show splash screen if DRM drivers get pulled into
initrd unexpectedly"), given the dual-GPU configuration. Possibly the AMD GPU
(with no display attached) is interfering with the DRM/KMS handoff during the
shutdown teardown path specifically, while the Intel GPU cleanly claims the
display during boot.
Additional notes: This is a cosmetic issue only — the system otherwise
functions correctly, including TPM unlock and shutdown itself completing
normally.
