Public bug reported:

Title: Automatic printer setup assigns HP Designjet T920 PPD to Dell
1355cnw despite exact Dell driver being installed

Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Printer: Dell 1355cnw Color MFP

Problem:

Ubuntu Settings automatically discovers the Dell 1355cnw over DNS-SD and
creates a CUPS queue. The queue appears ready and accepts print jobs.
Jobs briefly show as processing and then disappear normally, but the
printer remains completely silent and prints nothing.

The automatically created queue uses the following device URI:

dnssd://Dell%201355cnw%20Color%20MFP%20(64%3A42%3AEC)._pdl-
datastream._tcp.local/

The PPD selected automatically for the Dell printer was:

*ModelName: "HP Designjet T920 PostScript"
*NickName: "HP Designjet T920 PostScript"

This is an unrelated HP large-format PostScript printer driver.

The correct Dell driver was already installed and available when the
printer was added:

foo2zjs:0/ppd/foo2zjs/Dell-1355.ppd Dell 1355 Foomatic/foo2hbpl2
(recommended)

Expected result:

Automatic printer setup should select:

Dell 1355 Foomatic/foo2hbpl2 (recommended)

Alternatively, if the software cannot make a sufficiently confident
match, it should ask the user to select a driver rather than silently
choosing an unrelated manufacturer's PPD.

Actual result:

Automatic setup selected HP Designjet T920 PostScript. CUPS accepted and
completed jobs, but the Dell printer did not print because it was
receiving output produced for the wrong printer language.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install Ubuntu 24.04 and printer-driver-foo2zjs.
2. Connect a Dell 1355cnw to the local network.
3. Open Settings → Printers.
4. Select the automatically discovered Dell 1355cnw.
5. Allow Ubuntu to create the queue automatically.
6. Examine /etc/cups/ppd/Dell-1355cnw-Color-MFP.ppd.
7. Print a test page.

Relevant commands:

lpinfo -m | grep -i 1355

Output:

foo2zjs:0/ppd/foo2zjs/Dell-1355.ppd Dell 1355 Foomatic/foo2hbpl2
(recommended)

Command:

sudo grep -H -E '^*NickName|^*ModelName' /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd

Original output for the automatically created queue:

/etc/cups/ppd/Dell-1355cnw-Color-MFP.ppd:*ModelName: "HP Designjet T920
PostScript"
/etc/cups/ppd/Dell-1355cnw-Color-MFP.ppd:*NickName: "HP Designjet T920
PostScript"

Workaround:

Manually replace the queue's driver with:

foo2zjs:0/ppd/foo2zjs/Dell-1355.ppd

This worked and replaced the problem

Suggested area to investigate:

The printer/PPD matching performed by system-config-
printer/python3-cupshelpers, particularly getPPDNamesFromDeviceID() and
orderPPDNamesByPreference(), appears to be ranking an unrelated HP PPD
ahead of the exact Dell 1355 driver.

The attached diagnostics include the printer's discovered device URI,
make-and-model string, IEEE-1284 device ID if advertised, available PPDs
and relevant package versions.
