Public bug reported: Yesterday, July 8, 2026, while I was using my computer the display got weird. Everything got larger, large enough not to fit on the screen sometimes.
My computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen2, with an NVidia RTX-3500 GPU. My System is Kubuntu 24.04.4 LTS I also have a BenQ RD240Q external monitor that I plug into the laptop with an HDMI cable. $ lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available. Description: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS Release: 24.04 On the previous day, I had accepted a group of updates that had been pushed to me by the Kubuntu notifier. These included the following (taken from /var/log/apt/history.log): Start-Date: 2026-07-07 17:41:24 Commandline: packagekit role='update-packages' Requested-By: scohen (1000) Upgrade: xserver-xorg-core:amd64 (2:21.1.12-1ubuntu1.5, 2:21.1.12-1ubuntu1.6), libxmlb2:amd64 (0.3. 18-1, 0.3.24-1~ubuntu0.24.04.1), alsa-ucm-conf:amd64 (1.2.10-1ubuntu5.10, 1.2.10-1ubuntu5.11), xser ver-xorg-legacy:amd64 (2:21.1.12-1ubuntu1.5, 2:21.1.12-1ubuntu1.6), xserver-common:amd64 (2:21.1.12 -1ubuntu1.5, 2:21.1.12-1ubuntu1.6), rsync:amd64 (3.4.3-1ppa~noble2, 3.4.4-1ppa~noble1), libjcat1:am d64 (0.2.0-2build3, 0.2.3-1~ubuntu0.24.04.1), kpartx:amd64 (0.9.4-5ubuntu8.1, 0.9.4-5ubuntu8.2), ip route2:amd64 (6.1.0-1ubuntu6.3, 6.1.0-1ubuntu6.4), kpartx-boot:amd64 (0.9.4-5ubuntu8.1, 0.9.4-5ubun tu8.2) End-Date: 2026-07-07 17:41:36 Also included in the pushed upgrade notification were two firmware update packages from Lenovo. I have no record of what these were, unfortunately. I accepted these as well. These updates went smoothly and things seemed working normally until the next day, July 8, when suddenly, the resolution on the screen blew everything up to a larger size. When this happened I was using the computer in not very video-intensive ways. Web browsing. Writing a simple python script for my own use (non-graphic). The system went crazy right before my eyes! Notably, when moving the mouse, this not only moved the cursor, but also caused the windows on the screen to move in the opposite direction, a very disconcerting phenomenon! Sometimes the windows are too big to fit on screen and can't easily be closed. Here are a couple of screenshots that I have saved on Google Drive that should be accessible to you: when only one monitor is connected: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xX8NIiODacryISUKAPN1HC3Ai7D3lero/view and when two monitors are connected: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Jk6G02gsNL5Vod4P-cWLh7qRQESEewz5/view I have tried the following things to resolve this 1. Rebooting 2. Stopping and restarting system 3. Uninstalling the existing NVidia driver and installing a new one, and rebooting again. In the past this has been a useful thing to with monitor weirdness. 4. Attempting to change monitor resolutions in Kubuntu's System Settings --> Display and Monitor tab. 5. Stopping computer, unplugging external monitor, turning it back on. 6. Trying a number of different NVidia drivers and rebooting a. nvidia-driver-595-open (recommended driver) b. nvidia-driver-580-open c. xserver-xorg-video-nouveau d. nvidia-driver-595 None of these made any difference! Originally, I had thought that the second monitor was somehow to blame, but as #5 shows, the same pattern persisted without the external monitor. In fact the only way to get the system to be even minimally usable is with the second monitor. Then, windows exceeding the width of the built in screen can be moved onto the external screen. As #6 shows, changing nvidia drivers had no effect and even the non- nvidia Nouveau driver exhibits the problem. I am forced to conclude, then, that the problem must lie with the xorg packages that were installed or possibly with the Lenovo firmware upgrades that were done at the same time. I don't understand why the problem did not appear until a day later, but that still seems the most likely assumption to me.
