Regarding your patch your reasoning matches what I've gathered since then. The AVX2 instruction set specifically is missing from the Intel Haswell compatibility level which matches up to VMware 6.0 / vmx-11. That did tickly my brain a bit since I'm running an AMD cluster in production where I first encountered this bug.
