Creating ~/.config/environment.d/libreoffice-vcl.conf containing
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen
completely restores text and cell selection in Writer and Calc.
Title: LibreOffice 26.2 on Ubuntu 26.04 Wayland cannot select text/cells
unless SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen is used
System:

* GNOME Shell 50.1
* Session type: Wayland
* Desktop session: ubuntu
* LibreOffice version: 26.2.3.2 620(Build:2)
* LibreOffice package: 4:26.2.3.2-0ubuntu0.26.04.1
Problem:
LibreOffice Writer and Calc cannot select text or cells when launched normally
under the Ubuntu Wayland session.
Symptoms:
* In Writer, mouse drag moves the cursor but does not highlight/select text.
* Shift + Arrow does not select text.
* Ctrl+A does not select text.
* Edit → Select Text is greyed out.
* The same selection problem occurs in Calc.
* Text can still be typed and pasted normally.
* Text selection works normally in other applications such as Firefox and PDF
viewers.
* Both left and right Shift keys are detected correctly by xev.
* Resetting the LibreOffice user profile did not fix the issue.
Workaround:
Launching LibreOffice with the generic VCL backend fixes the issue:
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen libreoffice --writer
and
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen libreoffice --calc
Expected behavior:
LibreOffice should allow normal text/cell selection under the default Ubuntu
Wayland session.
Actual behavior:
Selection is broken unless LibreOffice is forced to use SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen.
This suggests a regression or compatibility issue in the default
LibreOffice VCL backend used under Ubuntu 26.04 Wayland.
