Public bug reported:
On Ubuntu 24.04 with hybrid AMD iGPU + NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU, PRIME
on-demand is enabled and switcheroo exposes the NVIDIA GPU as an offload
device, but nvidia-smi cannot communicate with the NVIDIA driver.
Environment:
- Ubuntu 24.04
- Kernel: 6.17.0-35-generic
- PRIME mode: on-demand
- Default GPU: AMD Raphael iGPU
- Offload GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
- NVIDIA driver: 580.159.03
- GNOME on Xorg/GDM
Current behavior:
- prime-select query returns: on-demand
- switcherooctl list shows AMD as the default GPU and NVIDIA as the offload
GPU
- NVIDIA kernel modules are loaded
- /dev/nvidia* nodes exist
- nvidia-smi fails with:
"NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA
driver."
Related desktop/portal crash:
- A related xdg-desktop-portal-gnome SIGSEGV was filed as Bug #2157672.
- Around the same session, GDM/Xorg logged NVIDIA display configuration
failures:
"NVIDIA(G0): Failed to set the display configuration"
and mode setting failed with "Insufficient permissions".
- The portal crash occurred during OBS screen/window capture after a hybrid
GPU session rebuild.
Expected behavior:
- In PRIME on-demand mode, the NVIDIA offload GPU should be usable by NVIDIA
tools and applications.
- nvidia-smi should communicate with the driver or report a clear
runtime-power/offload limitation instead of failing as if the driver is
unavailable.
