Public bug reported:
Hardware:
Motherboard: MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI
Wireless chip: MediaTek MT7922 (PCIe, mt7921e driver)
Kernels tested: 6.8.0-124-generic, 6.17.0-35-generic, 6.17.0-1025-oem
Problem:
Bluetooth is completely non-functional. The MT7922 chip never exposes a
Bluetooth USB device and never requests BT firmware
(BT_RAM_CODE_MT7922_1_1_hdr.bin.zst), despite the firmware file being present
in /lib/firmware/mediatek/.
Symptoms:
lsusb shows no MediaTek Bluetooth device
dmesg shows mt7921e loading only WiFi firmware (WM Firmware Version:
____000000), BT firmware never requested
bluetooth.service stays inactive/dead — no HCI controller found
bluetoothctl list returns "No default controller available"
No btmtk or BT-related entries in dmesg at any point
Steps tried:
Installed/reinstalled bluez, bluetooth, linux-firmware packages
Manually loaded btmtk, btusb modules
Removed entire mt76 stack (mt7921e, mt7921_common, mt792x_lib, mt76_connac_lib,
mt76) and reloaded — BT USB device appeared once but never reproducibly again
Added softdep mt7921e pre: btmtk btusb to /etc/modprobe.d/mt7921e.conf
Created systemd service to reload mt76 stack at boot — service ran successfully
but BT device never appeared
Upgraded to kernel 6.17.0-35-generic (HWE) — same result
Upgraded NVIDIA driver to 595-open to unblock kernel upgrade
Tried kernel 6.17.0-1025-oem — same result
Disabled Secure Boot — no change
Confirmed BT_RAM_CODE_MT7922_1_1_hdr.bin.zst is present but never loaded by
driver
Conclusion:
The mt7921e driver does not initialize the Bluetooth coprocessor for the MT7922
chip revision (ASIC revision: 79220010). The driver loads only WiFi firmware
and never attempts to bring up the BT side, regardless of module load order or
kernel version.
Relevant dmesg:
mt7921e 0000:0d:00.0: ASIC revision: 79220010
mt7921e 0000:0d:00.0: WM Firmware Version: ____000000, Build Time:
20250523103234
No BT firmware load, no HCI device registration.
