Public bug reported:
Impact
On Dell Pro 14 Premium PA14250 laptops with Intel Lunar Lake (Core Ultra 200V,
Graphics ID 64a0), the Intel xe driver loads successfully but fails to complete
eDP panel handshake after upgrading from Dell OEM Ubuntu 24.04.1 via IPU
(In-Place Upgrade). This results in:
Black screen or boot hang on laptop panel (no display)
System appears to boot but laptop screen remains black
External displays (HDMI/USB-C) work correctly, showing login/desktop
Boot with nomodeset works but disables GPU acceleration (not suitable for
development work)
Workaround: Blacklist xe driver and force i915 (older driver path)
Dell OEM Ubuntu 24.04.1 boots without issues, confirming this is a stock
Ubuntu kernel/xe stack compatibility issue, not hardware failure.
Expected Behavior
The xe driver should complete eDP panel initialization and display the desktop
normally on the laptop screen after boot, with hardware acceleration enabled.
Actual Behavior
System boots and kernel loads successfully
xe driver binds to GPU (device ID 64a0) without errors
DMC and GuC firmware initialize cleanly
Framebuffer fb0 xedrmfb registers as primary device
eDP-1 (laptop panel) connector is detected
BUT: eDP panel handshake fails after kernel handoff laptop screen remains
black or hangs
External displays work GDM/login appears on external monitor
TTY access (Ctrl+Alt+F3) unavailable graphical stack hangs before TTY switch
Reproduction Steps
1. Install Dell OEM Ubuntu 24.04.1 ISO on Dell Pro 14 Premium PA14250
(Lunar Lake, Core Ultra 7 266V or similar)
2. Verify laptop display works correctly with OEM image
3. Perform IPU (In-Place Upgrade) to stock Ubuntu 24.04.1 or later
4. Boot normally (without nomodeset)
5. System reaches graphical stage but laptop panel shows black screen or
hangs
6. External display connected via HDMI/USB-C shows login/desktop correctly
Alternative reproduction:
• Install stock Ubuntu 24.04.1+ (non-OEM) on Dell Pro 14 Premium PA14250
• Boot normally
• Same eDP handshake failure occur
Hardware:
• Laptop: Dell Pro 14 Premium PA14250
• CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 266V (Lunar Lake)
• GPU: Intel Lunar Lake (Intel Graphics), Graphics ID 64a0, Stepping B0
• Display: eDP-1 (laptop panel, likely OLED)
• External displays: HDMI/USB-C DP work correctly
Software:
• Ubuntu: 24.04.1 (stock, non-OEM) → tested up to 26.04
• Kernel: 6.17.0-23-generic (HWE stack)
• Driver: xe (loaded successfully, kernel driver in use per lspci -k)
• Desktop: GNOME Wayland (tried X11 same issue)
• Secure Boot: Enabled (tested disabled same issue)
