I am seeing the same behaviour on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
apparmor 5.0.0~beta1-0ubuntu7 amd64
creating a /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/sssd file with
@{HOMEDIRS}+=/home/berkshiregrey.com/
causes apparmor to fail with May 26 20:05:41 blastocyst-83f67d systemd[1]:

profile failed to load
May 26 20:05:43 blastocyst-83f67d systemd[1]: apparmor.service: Main process
exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
May 26 20:05:43 blastocyst-83f67d systemd[1]: apparmor.service: Failed with
result 'exit-code'.
