"apt install piboot-try" *said* it was happy, but the machine has now
failed to boot 3x, so it looks like it's screwed. bleh.

Since it's headless all I can tell is that it's not responding to ping. I'll 
have to move it to my desk over the weekend to investigate, but I'll update 
here if I find anything interesting.
I'm going to have to reimage it before Monday, so I won't be able to try any 
suggestions unless there's something you want to try blind tomorrow; and obv I 
won't be trying the update again any time soon, but I'll put the image on a 
spare SD card and will be happy to sacrifice that at some point in the future 
when time permits if you have a possible fix or things you'd like tried / 
pulled from it.
