If you add the hardy repositories, you can install the 2.6.24 kernel.

ie add

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe
multiverse

to /etc/apt/sources.list and do 'sudo apt-get update' (or you can do it
via the Repositories / Third-Party software and Reload button in
Synaptic).

I didn't install all the updates, only the latest linux-image, libc, and
the gcc/g++ compilers (libc etc so I could recompile various apps
without complaints). If you disable the hardy repositories afterwards,
the update manager won't keep telling you there are hundreds of updates
available.
