Ah. I'm sorry. It's possible that the bottom part of the window with the checkbox got hidden. Yes it works. It was zero length because there were no current markings. I was trying to save everything.
However, might I suggest that a better way would be to have a separate menu item along the lines of "save markings for all installed packages" rather than having the checkbox as an option at the bottom of the window. My guess is (i.e. no evidence for this) that most people are more likely to want to save the whole state than a few incremental markings.
