I got this same error message after upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 (alpha 3) I immediately tried an update after the upgrade because the upgrade to 8.04 had various problems. Basic things that were said to be included in the upgrade (e.g. Firefox 3 beta) were not present. The sudo command failed because it apparently could no-longer figure out my hostname or it didn't match something (fixed manually by editing /etc/hosts in recover mode). Lots of crashes, I know it's Alpha but the crashes are more often than I was expecting.
