Public bug reported:
Description:
Summary:
After upgrading to kernel 7.0.0-12-generic on Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute), the
NVIDIA driver (580.126.09) stopped working. The system falls back to simpledrm
at 1024x768 resolution.
Technical Details:
Version Mismatch: dpkg -l shows that linux-modules-
nvidia-580-open-7.0.0-10-generic is installed, but there is no
corresponding package for the current running kernel 7.0.0-12-generic.
Missing DKMS: The dkms package was not installed by default or was
removed during the upgrade, preventing the system from automatically
building the module for the new kernel.
Manual Build Failure: After manually installing dkms, the nvidia-
driver-580-open fails to compile against the 7.0.0-12-generic headers
(likely due to API changes in the 7.0.x kernel series).
Nova Driver: The new nova_core module is present in the system but
does not successfully initialize the RTX 4070 Ti, resulting in the
simpledrm fallback.
Hardware:
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti (AD104) / Device ID: 02:00.0
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900K
Motherboard: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO (BIOS 3001)
Steps to Reproduce:
Update Ubuntu 26.04 to Kernel 7.0.0-12-generic.
Reboot the system.
Observe the low resolution and lack of hardware acceleration.
Check lspci -k, which shows no kernel driver in use for the VGA
controller.
Expected Behavior:
The kernel should either have pre-built modules for version 7.0.0-12 or be able
to build them via DKMS.
Actual Behavior:
The driver is completely inactive. Falling back to simpledrm.
