Public bug reported:
## Bug Description
After a system update applied on or around April 1st, 2026, the `performance`
platform profile now keeps both fans running at maximum RPM constantly
(~6500 RPM), regardless of actual system temperature.
## Expected behavior
Before the update, using the `performance` profile worked correctly: fans
would only spin up when the system actually needed cooling, and remained
quiet or at low speed during light usage (browsing, etc.).
## Current behavior
After the update, as soon as the system boots with the `performance` profile
active, both fans run at full speed (~6500 RPM) and never slow down, even
when all temperatures are completely normal.
Confirmed sensor readings during the issue (light load, only browser running):
- CPU Package: ~41°C
- CPU Cores: 33–41°C
- GPU: ~30°C
- HDD/SSD: ~28°C
- CPU Fan: 6493 RPM (reported max: 4600 RPM)
- Video Fan: 6451 RPM (reported max: 4700 RPM)
Switching to `balanced` profile immediately normalizes fan speed:
echo "balanced" | sudo tee /sys/firmware/acpi/platform_profile
The issue is 100% reproducible by switching back to `performance`:
echo "performance" | sudo tee /sys/firmware/acpi/platform_profile
## Kernel comparison
- 6.17.0-1012-oem → performance profile works correctly (fans respond to temp)
- 6.17.0-1017-oem → performance profile keeps fans at max RPM always (BUG)
## System info
- Machine: Alienware 16 Aurora AC16250
- CPU: Intel Core 7 240H
- GPU: NVIDIA (discrete) + Intel Arc (integrated)
- OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat)
- Kernel: 6.17.0-1017-oem
- Desktop: GNOME (Wayland)
## Workaround
Setting platform_profile to `balanced` at boot via /etc/tmpfiles.d resolves
the symptom, but the `performance` profile should not behave this way.
This is a regression introduced between 1012 and 1017.
