When you open a media file which requires additional plugins, it
automatically downloads the necessary plugins and installs them,
provided you agree to do so.

A few of the media file formats require non-free plugins/codecs and
hence are not enabled by default. If you are ok with using non-free
codecs, they are enabled and used for you. This is the reason that some
media files may not be able to play by default. For more information
regarding restricted formats and how to enable them, check with the
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats page. Please ensure
whether you have enabled "Multiverse" repository in the Synaptic Package
Manager.
