I have discussed this problem with Rik Mills and Michael Mikowski in this Kubuntu issue:
https://invent.kde.org/teams/distribution-kubuntu/resolute- racoon-26.04-lts/-/issues/14 We came to the conclusion of completely banning/removing the GUI part of HPLIP from Ubuntu and its flavors, as it only causes head aches. In Ubuntu I had already split the GUI part of HPLIP into the separate hplip-gui binary package and we did not install it by default, the binary package got even demoted to Universe AFAIR. With this, we have experienced that only the drivers, the binary packages printer-driver-hpcups, libsane-hpaio and their dependencies, work perfectly well to support HP's printers and multi-function devices. The drivers are written in Cand so are not dependent on Python dynamics. In addition, we should ban/remove printer-driver-hpijs, as it duplicates printer-driver-hpcups and the latter is designed for CUPS and therefore better. The most reliable and safe solution would even be to completely drop hplip-gui and printer-driver-hpijs in Ubuntu's (perhaps even Debian's) packaging of HPLIP. Their conclusion: ----- Analysis and Proposed Action Rik reports hplip-toolbox and hplip-gui are both broken because of Python upgrade. Possible solutions: /etc/apt/preferences/10-kubuntu and pin bad packages to -1. - Keep hplip [Only the drivers: printer-driver-hpcups, libsane-hpaio and dependencies] - Blacklist hplip-gui and printer-driver-hpijs - Possibly using /etc/apt/preferences.d/kubuntu-hpijs and set -1 priorities - Use Conflicts: we probably don't want to use a Conflicts stanza because people will force installs (see Linus Tech Tips), and inadvertently uninstall all of kubuntu-desktop. ----- In the end Michael Mikowski comments: ----- Erich [Eickmeyer, from Ubuntu Stdio] suggest reaching out to debcrafters team via Discourse or Matrix channel to ask to remove hplip-gui and and printer-driver-hpijs. ----- ** Bug watch added: invent.kde.org/teams/distribution-kubuntu/resolute-racoon-26.04-lts/-/issues #14 https://invent.kde.org/teams/distribution-kubuntu/resolute-racoon-26.04-lts/-/issues/14 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2146570 Title: hp-toolbox crashes on starting To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/2146570/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
