Public bug reported:
After upgrading to kernel 6.17.0-19-generic, both fans run at
maximum speed (~4800 RPM) regardless of CPU temperature (~40°C at idle).
The issue starts immediately on boot and does not resolve itself.
Reverting to kernel 6.17.0-14-generic fixes the issue completely.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot with kernel 6.17.0-19-generic
2. Fans immediately run at maximum speed on boot
3. Check temperatures: CPU ~40°C (normal idle temps)
4. Check fan speed: ~4800 RPM (maximum)
Expected behavior:
Fans should run at low speed or be silent at idle temperatures (~40°C).
Actual behavior:
Fans run at maximum speed (~4800 RPM) regardless of temperature.
Workaround:
Booting with kernel 6.17.0-14-generic resolves the issue completely.
Hardware:
- Model: Dell Inc. Dell G15 5520
- CPU: 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700H
- GPU: NVIDIA (nvidia-driver-580-open) + Intel Iris Xe
- RAM: 16GB
- OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
- Kernel working: 6.17.0-14-generic
- Kernel broken: 6.17.0-19-generic
Additional notes:
The alienware_wmi module is loaded on this system (Dell G15 shares
platform with Alienware). This may be related to the fan control
changes introduced in alienware-wmi-wmax in recent kernel commits.
