Before discovering this bug report, I tried a few things. One was to use the radeon driver instead of fglrx. When having
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" set when using the radeon driver, the error did not occur even with xserver-xorg-core - 2:1.2.0-3ubuntu8.1. When the option above was commented out, the error did occur, however.
