Thanks for following up. I've since upgraded to 7.10.

This specific problem hasn't recurred, but I have had intermittent
stability problems similar to what was reported (though none as serious)
- in the most recent problem, I booted the machine and logged in while
the monitor was turned off. After turning on the monitor, I was unable
to change the screen resolution. I logged out then logged back in, and
my desktop was gone. The window manager froze and I had to do a hard
shutdown. Things recovered well after reboot.

As a practical matter, given the frequency of occurrence and the
unpredictable nature of similar behaviors (and the bug backlog), I'd
suggest changing the bug status to 'non-reproducible' or a similar
category for now, or leave it as incomplete, and close it. This doesn't
sound easy to trace down...
