Public bug reported:
After a system update on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the installation of the kernel
package
linux-image-6.14.0-37-generic failed or remained incomplete.
Symptoms observed:
- Multiple crash report dialogs at login (“System program problem detected”).
- GNOME session sometimes fails to start properly.
- Temporary freeze during boot (spinner pauses).
- Mouse cursor briefly appears corrupted (double/XX-like shape) at startup.
- Errors related to gdm, gnome-keyring, and kernel installation appear in
journalctl.
I switched manually to an older, stable kernel (6.8.0-90-generic), which
restores system stability.
However, the system keeps reporting errors related to the failed installation
of kernel 6.14.
This seems to be caused by an interrupted or broken kernel update process,
leaving the package linux-image-6.14.0-37-generic in an inconsistent state.
Please investigate the kernel update and post-install scripts for Ubuntu 24.04,
as this appears to cause repeated crash reports even when a stable kernel is in
use.
