@xnox Concerning ibs= the dd man page states:
ibs=BYTES
read up to BYTES bytes at a time (default: 512)
The important words here being "up to"; individual reads can turn out
shorter in practice.
If you are reliant on counting incoming blocks you need to also specify
iflag=fullblock.
fullblock
accumulate full blocks of input (iflag only)
