I tried to reproduce this again using a different setup. Previously, I was using Ubuntu i686 on a Sempron 2800+ with 512 MB of RAM. I just tried it on a much newer machine--X2 6000+ and 8 GB of RAM on amd64--and the bug is still there.
All I had to do was go to an Amazon item page, hit Ctrl+A to select all of the text on the page, then copy and paste it into a Pidgin conversation.
