The freshclam command is not meant to be run as a regular user. It
should be run as root, in which case it will drop privileges to "clamav"
and then update the databases in /var/lib/clamav
$ ls -la /var/lib/clamav/*
-rw-r--r-- 1 clamav clamav 284179 Aug 11 22:01 /var/lib/clamav/bytecode.cvd
-rw-r--r-- 1 clamav clamav 64699172 Aug 11 22:01 /var/lib/clamav/daily.cvd
-rw-r--r-- 1 clamav clamav 90 Aug 11 21:56 /var/lib/clamav/freshclam.dat
-rw-r--r-- 1 clamav clamav 170479789 Aug 11 22:01 /var/lib/clamav/main.cvd
On that basis, I'm going to close this bug. But if you have read
somewhere that a regular user should be able to run the "freshclam"
command, then please reopen this bug with a pointer to where that is
stated and we will investigate further.
