Public bug reported: I was asked to report this bug here as I had originally reported it to the Ubuntu Community Discourse: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/latest-hwe-kernel-breaks-virtualbox-in-noble/64578
Ubuntu Version: 24.04.2LTS Desktop Environment (if applicable): Unity and GNOME Problem Description: After upgrading the kernel to the latest HWE kernel (6.14.0-24-generic) Virtualbox fails to launch any VMs. Solution was to blacklist kvm, kvm-amd (on my desktop GNOME system) or kvm-intel (on my laptop Unity system) and then reboot Relevant System Information: Both desktop and laptop systems are completely up to date with maintenance. What I’ve Tried: Did some searches on the error messages produced by Virtualbox 7.1.10r169112 and discovered the solution which was to create /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-kvm.conf with the following entries: blacklist kvm blacklist kvm_intel # or kvm_amd and then reboot. ** Affects: linux-hwe-6.14 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2118999 Title: Latest HWE Kernel breaks Virtualbox in Noble To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-hwe-6.14/+bug/2118999/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
